Bridal makeup for hijabi brides

A hijab frames the face, so the look should be designed with it, not around it.

By Rama Shabaneh, makeup artist in Amman

The short answer

For a hijabi bride, design the makeup with the hijab: soft sculpting on the cheekbones and jaw because the face is the whole frame, colours chosen with the hijab and dress together, and a base set well at the jaw so the fabric stays clean. Pin the hijab after the makeup is finished.

The hijab frames your face

With the hairline and neck covered, the face becomes the whole picture. Soft sculpting along the cheekbones and jaw adds dimension, and the base should blend seamlessly at the edges where the fabric sits.

Choose colours with the hijab

White and ivory hijabs suit warm, luminous skin and soft rose or nude lips; deeper or coloured hijabs can carry a stronger lip. Send Rama a clear photo of the fabric with your dress before the day.

Keep the hijab clean

Set the base well around the jaw and under the chin, and pin the hijab after the makeup is finished, not before. A light setting spray helps the edges stay clean through the day.
